Fred Gambino

What is your name and your current occupation?
Fred Gambino, currently freelance illustrator and concept artist but about to start as art director for Xing Xing digital.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation/illustration?
I’ve worked as an illustrator all my working life, straight from college but I had a brief stint as a grocery delivery driver while I was establishing myself.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of? 
It’s hard to choose a favourite after so many years doing so much stuff. I will always have a soft spot for the Ant Bully as it was the first big animation production that I worked on. Firebreather at Cartoon Network was fun also.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I’m based in the UK in Derbyshire but have moved around the world to work on various projects from Dallas to LA to Vancouver.  I spent many years working traditionally in oils and acrylics as an illustrator, mainly of book covers but also some advertising. Boris Zhitomirsky

What is your name and your current occupation? 
My name is Boris Zhitomirsky and until recently my occupation was Interactive Designer in advertisement company. Now I am looking for another occupation to occupy.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation? 
At some point I was working in a Drama Theater as a stage designer and pretty soon started to spit out the pieces of my lungs after using all these high pressure sprays. No, no, no. It wasn’t the illegal graffiti at all. The only problem is that it was making me a little sick. Now I see it wasn’t actually the crazy job. That was a cool job.  The crazy job was to work in a hospital. I am not sure why but at some point I was accepted to the Med School and after spending a few years between reading the tons of books and cleaning after the sick people I got a license to treat them. And I did for a while. As a young Doctor I was working in Labour and Delivery unit, you see, and my personal record was 7 C-Sections in one night. That was crazy. I decided that after reaching this height in the Medical Field there is nothing else for me to do and promptly I took off. And live happily ever after!
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of? 
Some people might find it not worthy, but I am kinda proud of being part of the team working on “The Adventures Of Chico and Guapo” ( for MTV2). Not sure why but we did only one season. Still, it was fun to work with many talented people.
Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business? 
I was born in USSR. That was a country before it became Russia. Now it is becoming USSR again. You might have heard of that country once or twice. So, when I was a little boy we had a black and white TV sets and only 2 channels. During the Summer time at 7:00 pm they were showing “Tom and Jerry”. I have no idea how the government of the USSR gave an approval to show the American Cartoons to the gentle Socialist kids. But we were internally great full for this opportunity to watch “the cat and mouse” and later on a playground to reenact it as well. I was 4 or 5 years old. And then I saw  “The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad”“ by Ray Harryhausen…I guess that’s when I realized that no matter what Siberian prison I might end up, but I want to be an animator.

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Kat Miranda and I’m a freelance story artist/illustrator.

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Hmm crazier than animation? I served at the Cheesecake Factory for 3 years and for a short while I also worked for the government. Top secret stuff, you know. (They’re probably monitoring this interview as I type!)

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
While interning at Titmouse in Manhattan, I’ve had the pleasure to work on Venture Bros Season 5! GO TEAM VENTURE! Also a tad on Metal, a tad on Super Jail and a tad on Motor City helping with little things over all!

How did you become interested in animation?
I watched movies such as Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Sword in the Stone and all the other amazing disney features. But I also loved my saturday morning cartoons like Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Hey Arnold, AH! Real Monsters, and you get the gist of it. “The Giant’s Dream- The Making of Iron Giant” teaser trailer

Iron Giant was arguably one of the greatest animated films of all time, yet it fell on it’s feet at the box office due to executive fear and suppression of advertising which is odd since Warner Bros was literally frothing at the mouth to get an animated feature off the ground. Enter Brad Bird who WB execs reportedly allowed to make the film essentially unsupervised and once they saw the film and how good it was they feared for their jobs and suppressed it as best they could.

REALLY looking forward to this film!

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Sandra Loke and I’m currently working as a freelance Layout Artist and Background Painter at Chuck Gammage Animation.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation? 
Haha Well, I used to work at a Golf Course doing maintenance. I got to cut grass on some crazy machines. I also had to watch out for golfers cause some of them liked to aim at you!
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of? 
The first thing I got to work on was a DC Nation’s short. I remember when I was in my interview they were like “so can you do layouts?” and I said yes. Then they were like “well you get to do Batman.” It was totally a dream come true. The little girl inside my head was like OMG BATMAN YAY!!!

What is your name and your current occupation?
I’m Terry and I’m currently a freelance for hire animation/motion graphics artist

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I was a music store clerk for about 4 years cumulative, pizza guy, paraprofessional, and also a waitstaffer at public and private events where I once saw the taxidermied head of a black man at a game hunter’s estate.  It was next to a basketball encased in glass.  Oh yeah, also worked at Radio Shack!

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Haven’t had to many gigs, but in terms of projects I liked doing Cybetales-Cafe 4 for the Playboy animation contest.  It didn’t win but I leaned a lot about animation pipelines hands on.  The only thing I didn’t do on that was the music which was created by my friend Polyphonic.  I also worked on a mech based fighting game in Unity.  I actually like programming and will do more with that hopefully as I have been designing and testing more mecha.  I’m also doing a lot more architectural stuff these days.
