Pressure sensitive stylus for your iMac, iPad & MacBook Pro! by Cregle Inc. — Kickstarter

A reader posted this in the comments of my post yesterday about a Cintiq alternative and I felt it too needed it’s own post. Cregle Inc has come up with  away to turn your iMac, iPad or MacBook Pro into a more or less what is a Cintiq. For small change!

The whole process works by putting calibration discs on the edges of your monitor and having it sync with the included pen. It’s actually pretty damn ingenious if you ask me. It seems the reason it works on the iPad, iMac and MacBook Pro is mostly because they all have glass over their lcds whereas not all monitors do. If i press my monitor it has a squishy feel to it and you get some liquid spreading out from under my finger. I can see my monitor breaking quickly. the iMacs have glass over that part though and so do the iPads and MacBook Pros so it seems it would probably work on anything that has glass on it. Anyway, check the link out below. I hope it gets funded because it could change the way we do business.

News: A Cheaper Cintiq alternative

Yiynova-tablet-monitor

One of the things prevalent in today’s animation industry is the ramant digital takeover. It’s everywhere and only a short-sighted artist can dodge it. Pencils, paper and erasers have given way to digital screens and styli. Many in our industry do not like it and yet, we really have no choice but to either embrace it or get out of the way for those who do. If you read this site’s posts with any regularity, one thing stands out more than the rest; in the fact that while many of us artists work on money making juggernauts of humor and fun, not many of us make a lot of money doing it. Most artists are not rich and shelling out over two grand for a piece of equipment is not easy.

Well, I came across a post by an talented artist named Luc Latulippe who brought my attention to an new device called the Yiynova MSP19U Tablet Monitor

This in turn was from another Tumblr site of another talented artist named Ray Frenden who bought one and reviews it. Apparently he loves it even tohugh it does not have the extra buttons on the Cintiq. Whatever, for around $500 bucks it’s a steal and you really can’t beat it.

Ray has an Amazon store set up where you can buy the Yiynova but it seems to be out of stock now. I’m sure that’s because his site has gotten 35,000+ hits since he posted. It’ll come back. If you buy one let us know!

News: Nickelodeon Shorts Program

Nick-shorts-program

Nickelodeon is doing another shorts program! A number of great shows have come out of ther shorts programs; Fairly Odd Parents, Fanboy and Chum Chum and Adventure Time to name a few.

According to the site:

Animated shorts must be: comedic, character driven, and have kid appeal. We look for ideas that feature an original, funny lead character – with about 2 or 3 characters in total. Be prepared to show either through designs, thumbnail storyboards or script, how funny and unique your characters are.

You can read more about the Nickelodeon Shorts program at the link below.

News: Hitchcock Storyboards from 13 Classic Films

2995Topaz-1969

Storyboarding is an essential part of film making ,both live action and animated especially these days with so many visual effects. It all has to be planned out to perfectly to minimize the shot list and the budget and it’s not an easy thing to do. I can’t even imagine something like this chase sequence from Tin Tin not being storyboarded first. Well, storyboards as  you probably know have been around a long time and Walt Disney himself is said to have been one of the first to implement them into his workflow. Likewise, Alfred Hitchock was said to have used them extensively on his films. Check out this great article about Hitchcock and the storyboarding of his films.

News: Anton Bogaty’s “Belly String”

Anton Bogaty has a great way with the medium of film. He is able to get a story out there quickly and effectively with minimal movement and style. He also loves face melting and you can’t really get enough of that! 🙂

Check out this film below to see what I mean!

Here’s another one! He truly makes it seem effortless.

And here’s a really well done one too. I like how his films are so dark yet have a Mary Blair sort of whimsy.

And here’s my favorite he did called Summer Heist. It tells a nice little story and does it well. Again minimal movement.

We did an interview with Anton back in January, and a quick look to his blog shows he’s been busy! Never mind his website! The man is a MACHINE! Finally, check out some of his art. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

I am in awe.
