What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I have done all sorts of job to get my daily bread. It starts from cleaning, catering, mentoring, printing, graphic designing and it is a long list. Fortunately I did not do those jobs for a long time. I got the job as an animator right after I completed my graduation.

What are some of your favourite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Blue sky’s Ice age: The Great Egg-Scapade. It was great learning curve. I had chance to animate those iconic characters, I never thought I could even touch . And I love most of the projects I worked on. Every projects in some way taught me something new.

How did you become interested in animation?
As a kid, I used to draw and paint. And my parents really appreciated my work and supported me.  And I felt that I am really enjoying the world of colours, light, shadows… And it was that time  movies like Jurassic park, Lion king got released. And those movies had a huge influence on me. And gradually I decided to pursue a career which I really enjoy. So I started to learn 2d animation and eventually 3d animation. And I really owe my family for supporting me.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
I spend first a half an hour to watch my work from  earlier day. And I will take some notes which will help to take my shots into another level. And next thing I watch works from my colleagues and try to get more inspiration from them. Rest of my day depends on the types of projects I am working on. I might need to attend meetings with different people and get feed back from them on my works. But most of the day I spent animating the characters. Continue reading

The Minimalist Animation of ‘Archer’

AWN has an interesting article about my favorite prime time show Archer on FX and highlights their production pipeline as well which is rare for even for an animation interview. Producer Neil Holman and art director Chad Hurd detail the limited but highly stylized animation techniques they wield to devastatingly hilarious effect on their hit FX animated series.

CH: Yeah, well one big new thing that we’re using now is Toon Boom Harmony, which is kind of like a super fancy Flash that’s made for animating. It’s a lot more traditional and we’ve been using this a lot more with our rigs. Anything that you see that has a lot of movement, usually our action scenes, like when we do a big spin kick, that’s done in Harmony. We’ve been using that a good bit more this season. You’re going to see a lot of fun action scenes.

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Ian Dorian. I currently work as a concept and character designer, toy sculptor, and, Adjunct professor.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I have done lots of things that required me to really learn about myself, I worked for butchers, sold hardware, worked for the government, and as an investigator.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
To be honest, I’m proud of everything I’ve worked on. Not because I think I always did a smashing job. Because I’ve had failures almost as much as successes..or is that the other way around? Hahaha! I have to say I really enjoyed the early years working for a start up studio. I created some of my best characters and had the chance to work with some great talent. Jim Krueger was a great guy to work with. He was the writer on a big project I created and developed. He taught me a ton. He was very open minded and very accommodating to the needs of the company. I also enjoyed working as a sculptor for a few Toy and Game companies. I still haven’t created my dream “piece” yet but being able to challenge my 3D skills is a lot of fun. As far as my current work goes working with Atlas Model Railroad Train Co. is always a pleasure. Those guys are so involved (in a good way) in everything they produce and they have been very supportive and creative to what we are doing. Mila (Milafilm.com) Is a project I recently joined. It’s an animation that deals with the survivors of war. Cinzia Angelini (the creator) is a wonderful person to communicate with and the team is very down to earth and top professionals. I’m glad to be a part of such a great and ambitious project such as this one.

How did you become interested in animation?
Bugs Bunny, Battle of the Planets, Ninja Scroll, Thundercats, Transformers, Johnny Quest, Jungle Book, Every single Pixar animated film especially Monsters incorporated, Ratatouille and Toy Story….and the list goes on. Animation has always seemed like a dream set to pictures. The drama! The tension! The sadness! The ability to go beyond your fears! The ability to Continue reading

“Dogtor” by Rhea Dadoo

A cute and realistically acted piece from second year film student Rhea Dadoo at CalArts.

It’s about friendship and reflecting on personal journeys–also dogs! Making this film definitely got me out of my comfort zone and proved to be a great learning experience! Thank you to faculty and classmates for all your guidance and support–couldn’t have done it without you!
