What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?It’s almost impossible for me to work on a project I’m not excited about. So if you see me working on a project, most likely I’m at least 90% excited about it. Some of my favorites are TRON: Legacy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (TV), FXGURU and Mythic Journey Documentary.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I am originally from Taiwan. When I was 8, my family and I moved to Malaysia. I went to a British high school there and that’s where I learned Continue reading

Ha! I was a Tatto Artist, A line cook at a number of restaurants, and I got paid to watch movie screenings.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
It was really fun to work on Despicable Me 2 doing storyboards. I really got to flex my creativity and have fun. the director let me add gags and take the action in crazy directions just to see what I would come up with. LEGO:Star Wars The Empire Strikes Out (at Threshold Animation) was really great because I got to finally work on a Star wars project AND we got to make fun of it.

How did you become interested in animation?
I grew up on classic Warner Brothers and Tex Avery shorts. They used to show those on TV. Then in college I would Continue reading

Daran Carlin-Weber

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Daran Carlin-Weber, and I’m currently a freelance Flash animator.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I worked at a KFC/Taco Bell (yes they are out there) right around when that freaky Doubledown sandwich came out. That sandwich made me fear for humanity and anyone bold or fool-hearty enough to order it. Oh, I also worked as a cashier/cook a Sheetz gas station up until recently. Not crazy, but they truly have some of the best food you could possibly get at a gas station.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I haven’t gotten to be involved with too many projects yet. But I did get to work on a Halo motion comic when I interned at MoreFrames Animation, which was pretty cool. My favorite project I’ve done myself would probably my current project “Summer Rec” since it’s coming closer to what I’ve envisioned than any other project I’ve ever worked on.
How did you become interested in animation?
I’ve been interested in animation as long as I can remember. I used to watch so many cartoons when I was little. Well, I still do so I guess not much has changed, same shows too. I used to draw comics and I tried to Continue reading

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Definitely the halowars cinematics and the work blur did on the pitch for the Goon feature film, also working on the star Wars : the old republic cinematics was pretty challenging . Also doing one of the NFL on fox robots for their pre game tv commercials was very rewarding.

I also really enjoyed working on Team Smithereen with the Dan Clark company.  That was one of the funnest jobs I ever had.

As a kid, films like Mary Poppins and Sleeping Beauty were magic to me.  I wanted to be a part of that.
I think it was a culmination of the love of drawing and the idea that animation is a legitimate form of storytelling and fine art together.

2d Wednesday BONUS- Tie Fighter

Okay, granted I already posted the first 2D Wednesday video today but I HAD to share this crazy incredible feat on manliness by Paul Johnson which is blowin’ up the internet today called Tie Fighter! Now Paul is no newbie when it comes to animation and he’s got a long list of credits up on IMDB such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,  Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas and Fan Boy and Chum Chum to name a few, all animator credits I might add which makes me wonder if he’s overseas.

It seems there was some use of rotoscoping s well as some cell shaders for the ships but regardless it’s a MONUMENTAL amount of work!

From the Youtube post:

What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that’s all but vanished from Japan nowadays?
Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards.
Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years’ worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts’ seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day…

Special thanks to the good folk at Lucasfilm for encouraging people to get creative and make these kind of projects. It’s thanks to their extremely fan-friendly nature that we can enjoy IMPS: The Relentless, TROOPS, etc.

Don’t support me on Patreon, because I don’t have one! And don’t donate to my Kickstarter, because I don’t have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can of Coke or something. Seriously, it’ll probably make their day.
That would totally make my day.
