Job Description
We are looking for an artist with a diverse set of design skills to work in a fast paced, television production environment. The ideal candidate will be able to complete architectural elevation drawings and turnarounds from approved designs, generate rough concepts to explore new designs, as well as explore color palette ideas. They will need to be able to design within the style of the show as well as work digitally on a Cintiq and various software programs, including, but not limited to Photoshop and Illustrator. They should be organized and able to manage a variety of tasks within the given schedule.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Resolve design problems with creative supervisors.
  • Ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Communicate progress of work to appropriate production staff.
  • Ensure all artwork is properly backed up and stored appropriately.
  • Ensure all shipping materials are prepared and ready on time.
  • Work with partner studios.
Required Skills
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in style of show.
  • Strong design and construction/mechanical skills.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn applicable design software and hardware.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Must be organized and able to work within a schedule.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask required.
  • Must know Photoshop.

Todd Hampson, Founder/CAO of Timbuktoons, LLC, a 2D animation and IP/concept development company.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I grilled and/or burnt many steaks at a cafeteria style steakhouse in the 11th grade and delivered food to (and occasionally had food thrown at me by) elderly patients at a hospital during my first year of college. Good times.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Character Design room murals for 3 episodes of Extreme Makeover Home Edition (2 episodes will run the week of Christmas).Visual development and animation production on 9 DVD’s for Phil Vischer’s (Creator of Veggie Tales) latest DVD series “What’s In the Bible?”.  Action Comic Illustrations and Animation for a National Archives traveling exhibit.  Animated commercial spot for Myth Busters.  Production of Addy and Telly Award winning animated commercial series for an automotive company.

How did you become interested in animation?

Kenard Pak Visual Development Artist at PDI Dreamworks.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Nothing too crazy. I’ve flipped burgers, cleaned dishes + bathrooms, got yelled at for bad video rentals.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I’m very proud of “Madagascar 3”. We were an excellent, inspiring, professional + fun art team. This doesn’t happen very often,
and I consider myself very fortunate to have been a part of it. The film that started my career, “Prince of Egypt”, is also very memorable.  Not only did I get my start on such a mammoth project, but I learned so much from the legendary artists that had designed it.  At Disney Feature I had a great time on their pre-production projects, and I also have some interesting memories working  with the director Monkmus on his “Topside Rag” shorts.

What is your name and your current occupation?

My name is Cassandra Poulson and I am a visual development artist for animation.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I worked my way through art college in Savannah Georgia by bartending. I bartended at a fine dining restaurant and on a cruise boat. I was also able to make a little bit of money by doing fashion modeling for photographers and students.
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
“The Girl and The Fox” was the first film I ever worked on. I met Tyler Kupferer, a now friend and writer/director of the film, at “The Animation Show of Shows” at SCAD. It was the beginning of my sophomore year. I think I was 19- I did concept paintings, worked on color and environment design, designed the “Fox” character, and served as lead background painter. It was such a personal project for me, and has a lot of heart in it from everyone who contributed. It’s been a shock to all of us that it’s made it so far in the industry. It is now a proud nominee for an Annie award! And has been a true joy and honor for me.

Luc Desmarchelier

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Luc Desmarchelier. I am currently a full time faculty at the Laguna College of Art and Design where I teach Visual Development and Illustration. I am also working as a free-lance artist in the animation industry.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
As an Art Director for an Advertising agency in the french caribbean islands, I had to design and supervise many commercials on such small budgets that I had to do a lot more than is usually expected from the art director. This included appearing in one of the spots in full make-up, with my teeth painted white with nail varnish… Not something I would do today.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
The ‘Corpse Bride’ was a wonderful project. All of Dreamworks animation early projects were exciting; among them ‘Spirit’ is the one to which I made the greatest contribution.

Danielle Powers

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Danielle Powers and most recently I’ve worked on a freelance project doing visual development and before that I worked at Nickelodeon as a texture artist apprentice.

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Nothing too crazy. I’ve worked at Taco Bell, Albertson’s, and my college library to name a few.

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
The Penguins of Madagascar was my favorite project to work on. I was on the show for nearly a year and I’m proud to say I was a part of it and I worked on it from the very beginning, before there was even an art director. I painted A LOT of textures for the character’s habitats which were used in the pilot episode and I see them show up in many current episodes and even Penguins toys at Toys R Us.

When I was five, the Little Mermaid had just been released and I was obsessed with it. I remember bringing the video tape to kindergarten to watch in class and feeling very proud that I was the first kid to own the video.
